He accused the government of “not having a complete grasp of the rule of law.” He said the rule of law can be defined as the system of a state that respects human rights, protects rights and freedom, and where every process and transaction is in line with the law. He said such a state should be committed to the supremacy of law and open to judicial review.
“The person who sits in the seat of the prime minister should go on and read and learn about what rule of law means,” the CHP leader said. He said in a state where there is the rule of law, there can be no laws customized to fit the individual situation of different people. “Nobody is superior to the law. In a country ruled by law, not the strong ones are right, but those that are right are strong.”
He said elections are important, but they don’t constitute a democracy on their own. “For example, Hİtler was elected by popular vote. Mussolini was elected. They were elected, but after a while, they started to see themselves as the state. And humanity had to pay a very high price. Such events also took place in our democracy. We sent prime ministers, young people to the gallows. Supremacy of law is a most important concept. Everyone should internalize it.”
